Our Framework
The present moment shapes future moments.
We’re all experiencing this particular moment in this history of time together. How we experience it is impacted by our unique life experiences and how those experiences created lenses through which we view the world around us (and how we fit into it).
In the 1960s, sociologists Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann helped create a field of study called social constructionism. This sociological field of study looks at how, over time, the ways that people view other people’s actions in a culture become embedded into the culture. Berger and Luckmann thought about this process in a generational way:
Generation “A”: This is how we’re going to do it.
Generation “B” (the generation that follows Gen A): This is how our elders did it.
Generation “C” (the following generation): This is how we do it.
Generation “D” (the next generation): It has always been done this way.
Our cultures contain people who grew up in and have lived through different generations, each of which has experienced considerable change. Someone who has grown up in “Generation D” may have different expectations than someone who great up in “Generation A” (and vice versa). And all of us, now, are shaping what future generations expect.

Creative Expression: Generations of Change in Your Life
Hey there, wonderful parent and person in your own right. Let’s get in touch with some of the cultural changes that have impacted our families and our lives and our expectations.
We invite you to try out the following (or whatever part(s) resonate with you):
- We’ll need the internet and something with which to take notes. Now is a great time to choose what will work for you.
- Think about 1 or 2 cultural issues that you care about (like racial justice or LGBTQIA+ rights or women’s rights).
- Look up and read about some of the milestones of that movement’s history. Take note of some of the milestones that resonate with you. Write them down or create a voice memo. Try to note the date that these milestones occurred.
- Think about these milestones in context of your life and your ancestors’ loves. Were you alive when any of the milestones happened? How old were you? What was life like for you at that point in your life? If you weren’t alive then, were any of your ancestors? What were some other things that were happening in your ancestors’ lives at that point?
- Journal or draw about the overlap of historical milestones and your family’s lived experiences. Does this layering impact how you think about the historical milestones for change? Perhaps take a couple of moments to breathe deeply and notice how you feel in your body. Does something feel alive in you? What would you like to bring into this present moment in the history of time to help shape the future?
