Feeling connections and met needs
The presence, groundedness, and connection speak to us. Let’s listen.
Our Framework
We usually like to feel these feels
Oh yeah. There are some feelings that we generally want to experience. We feel happy. Loved. Interested. Because these feelings indicate that something we’re experiencing in an important relationship is working well at the moment.
The feelings themselves aren’t good. Or bad. They’re just feelings: reactions to things that we experience. Some of our experiences offer us connections or needs that are met by ourselves or other people. When this happens, we may experience one of the reactions named later on this page. If we can identify the feeling–really name it–our brains can better wrap our minds around the feeling, help make sense of our experience, and help hold the feeling and experience.
You are not alone in experiencing these feelings. They are worth naming and understanding so we can create greater meaning of our experiences.

Let’s Do This Thing Together
Creative Expression: An Exercise in Holding What We Want to Feel
Hey there, wonderful parent and person in your own right. Let’s practice feeling the pleasant feels and holding our full selves through it all.
We invite you to try out the following (or whatever part(s) resonate with you):
- It’s collage time! Get some paper, magazines, scissors, and some glue. We’re going to art it out for a few minutes!
- Check out the feelings listed on this page. Are there a couple that really appeal to you in this moment (whether you have that feeling in abundance at this time or not)? Spend about 5 minutes thinking about the feelings that really appeal to you. Try to remember to breathe deeply, if you can.
- Take about 30 minutes to create a collage that represents these feelings to you. Anything goes. If a photo or drawing or word from a magazine or newspaper or flyer or letter speaks to you, go for it!
- When you get the sense you’ve finished your collage (at least for now), check in with your body. Does anything feel alive in your body? How is your heart in this moment?
- Consider keeping your collage somewhere you can see it or at least find it when you want to check it out again. These feelings are yours, whether you’re experiencing them in any given moment or not. They live in you. They are part of you. They are yours.
