Oh, we're gonna dance

Maybe in our bodies; certainly in our hearts

Our Framework

What’s the music of your moment?

Your repairenting team loves to dance. We dance during trainings. We dance with our kids. We dance alone at home. We dance until our dogs sit on our feet to get us to stop (okay, maybe that’s just how kerry’s dog responds to her).

We also dance without moving our bodies. Our minds engage in delicate dances with our kids, partners, families, friends, co-workers, and neighbors as we all try to navigate through the day. Our hearts leap and soar when our children are well and they move frantically or slowly when our children are struggling.

We dance with every breath we take, as our bodies naturally and unconsciously move against and pull in the air around us.

We dance each time we blink our eyes, as our eyelids releve against gravity.

We dance when we are present with ourselves and our children.

We invite you to dance with us, in the way that your mind, heart, and body feel is best to respond. Check out these tunes that get the repairenting team moving in our heads, hearts, and bodies.

Songs when we want to feel loving and loved

"On Children" by Sweet Honey in the Rock

We feel inspired and connected when we listen to this song!

"Always" by Stevie Wonder

I used to sing along to this song when I was pregnant and then after my child was born. Love the depth of feeling and creative imagery!

"Blue" by Beyonce

“Each day I feel so blessed to be looking at you ’cause when you open your eyes, I feel alive.” Yes!

"Glory" by Jay-Z

As a mom who struggled with fertility, this brings me back to the magic and gift of my child when my child’s emotional needs are bigger than what I have to offer in the moment.

"Sweetest Devotion" by Adele

“There is something in your loving that tears down my walls.” This resonates deeply with us: the deep love (and deep vulnerability) of parenthood.

Songs when we want to move (’cause we get to like music that has nothing to do with our kids)

"Underwater" by Rufus Du Sol

Gets me moving every time!

"Uptown Funk" by Bruno Mars & Mark Ronson

Come on, we know your moves are “smoother than a fresh jar of Skippy.”

"Let Me Clear My Throat" by DJ Kool

We can still “rip up the house,” mamas and papas.

"Shake it Off" by Taylor Swift

Can’t stop, won’t stop.

"Where Have You Been" by Rihanna

Full disclosure: someone on the repairenting team still pulls out the old Wii Just Dance disk to rock it out to this song (and have some moves to follow).

"Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns N' Roses

“Where do we go now?” We don’t know, but we’re dancing there.

Songs when we want to blow off some steam

"America" by Prince

It’s Prince, so you know it’s gonna be good.

"The Rockafeller Skank" by Fat Boy Slim

Gets us moving and centered in our bodies instead of our minds.

"Nothing Breaks Like a Heart" by Miley Cyrus & Mark Ronson

“This world can hurt you”–and we continue on.

"Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand

Yeah, this is actually another one we have on repeat on the good old Wii dance disks.

"Green Light" by Lorde

Sometimes, we need to move when waiting for that green light.

"Shake it Out" by Florence + the Machine

“It’s always darkest before the dawn.”

"Without Me" by Halsey

The need for respect and a shared reality resonates with us.

Let’s Do This Thing Together

Creative Expression: What Moves Your Heart Might Just Move the World

Hey there, wonderful parent and person in your own right. Let’s listen in to what moves us so we can move the world around us in a better direction.

We invite you to try out the following (or whatever part(s) resonate with you):

  1. Think about 3 – 5 songs that speak to you. Write down their names.
  2. Listen to those fabulous songs. Really listen to them, each of them at least once. Try to practice being in the moment with each song.
  3. Take 5 – 10 minutes to think about the songs you chose. How did you feel when you listened to each song? Were there some themes or similarities in how you felt?
  4. Do you want other people to feel the way you felt when listening to these songs? What needs would be met by your loved ones or the greater community if people felt this way? Consider taking a few minutes to draw it out, sing it out, or move it out when thinking about these needs.
